Solving real electrification challenges in mining

As the mining industry continues to evolve, operators around the world are looking for ways to increase productivity and efficiency, increase safety standards, and decarbonise their operations.

IGO commissioned Perenti and ABB to evaluate the technical feasibility, cost, and operational implications of implementing a battery electric fleet underground at IGO’s Cosmos Nickel Project in Western Australia

Leveraging the three companies’ combined electrification knowledge and underground mine operations expertise, this report is one of the first to comprehensively detail the requirements for underground mine electrification and diesel fleet transition.

What you'll find in the report

This paper outlines key developments in mine electrification, examines the Study's findings, and discusses the implications for the mining industry when transitioning underground fleets from diesel to BEVs.

Key findings

1. Based on Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) provided assumptions, BEV fleet offerings matching the productivity of the existing Cosmos diesel mobile fleet are available to the Australian market.

2. The estimated cost to electrify the Cosmos underground fleet was not prohibitive over the envisaged life of mine, even based on conservative productivity and cost assumptions.

3. The total power consumption of a fully electrified fleet was calculated to be less than that of the equivalent diesel operation, due to substantial power savings in mine cooling and ventilation.
